How To Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay prevention is the best form of treatment

What causes tooth decay?

Caries occurs when bacteria in plaque metabolises sugar to form plaque acid. Inside the mouth, bacteria produce acids which weaken the tooth. These bacteria can multiply to form plaque which attaches itself to the tooth and causes tooth decay to start.
Sugary foods such as fruit juices, soft drinks and lollies are converted into acids which cause enamel erosion which contributes to the development of tooth decay:

Follow the following steps to help prevent tooth decay:

Limit the consumption of sugary foods and drinks to reduce the acid levels in your mouth
Brush your teeth twice a day
Clean between your teeth regularly using floss or an inter-dental brush
Rinse with a fluoride mouthwash after brushing and flossing
See your dentist regularly for a professional clean and check-ups to arrest any potential decay

Protective role of fluoride

Regular use of fluoride is an effective means of preventing tooth decay. Fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes help strengthen tooth enamel. Teeth are thus less sensitive to acid attacks and therefore less susceptible to tooth decay.
